The 1,2-propylenediamine molecule contains two polar amino functional groups (-NH2), which makes the molecule as a whole have strong polarity. The two amino functional groups can interact with the surrounding molecules through hydrogen bonds, thereby increasing the interaction between molecules, which makes the boiling point and melting point of 1,2-propylenediamine relatively high. It can react with acylating agents (such as acid anhydrides, acyl chlorides, etc.) to generate corresponding acylated products.

1,2-Propylenediamine is used in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals and synthetic dyes, and is also used as a cellosolve, rubber vulcanization accelerator, etc.
It is used in the production of mineral processing agents, metal passivators, air-conditioning resin curing agents, rubber vulcanization accelerators, dyes, electroplating and analytical reagents (testing of mercury, copper and silver). In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used to produce 1,2-propylenediaminetetraacetic acid, as an intermediate for the anticancer drug aprotinin.

1,2-Propylenediamine is corrosive and has strong irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and can cause burns after contact. Protective equipment such as protective glasses and gloves should be worn when using it. It is flammable. Its vapor can form an explosive mixture with air. It can cause combustion and explosion when exposed to open flames or high heat. It should be stored and used away from fire and heat sources and maintained in good ventilation.
