3-(1-cyanoethyl)benzoic acid is prepared from methyl 3-cyanomethylbenzoate, which is first reacted with dimethyl carbonate in the presence of potassium carbonate to obtain methyl 3-(1-cyanoethyl)benzoate, which is then hydrolyzed, acidified, crystallized, and purified to obtain 3-(1-cyanoethyl)benzoic acid.

3-(1-cyanoethyl)benzoic acid is a key intermediate in the synthesis of the antipyretic analgesic ketoprofen. Ketoprofen is a new type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, widely used to treat various arthritis, joint swelling and pain caused by ankylosing spondylitis, as well as dysmenorrhea, toothache, postoperative pain and cancer pain. It can also be used to screen cobalt-containing nitrile hydratase.
