Dicyandiamide, abbreviated as DICY or DCD, is a dimer of cyanamide and also a cyanide derivative of guanidine. It is a white crystalline powder. It is soluble in water, alcohols, ethylene glycol and dimethylformamide, and is almost insoluble in ethers and benzene. It is non-flammable. It is stable when dried.
Dicyandiamide curing agent belongs to one of the earliest types of latent curing agents that are heated for curing. It is in solid form at room temperature and insoluble in epoxy resin. It is dispersed in epoxy resin in the form of microparticles and then undergoes heating reaction. Once heated to near the melting point, it begins to dissolve and rapidly react for curing.

1.Physical and chemical properties: The aqueous solution of dicyandiamide will gradually decompose and produce ammonia when heated above 80℃; when the crystals of dicyandiamide are heated to their melting point, they will melt and immediately generate intense heat upon melting, resulting in the formation of tricyandiamine, melamine, etc.
2.Hazard: When heated, dicyandiamide decomposes and generates toxic gases containing ammonia; it reacts violently with strong oxidants such as ammonium nitrate, posing the risk of fire and explosion; it also reacts with acids to produce toxic gases containing hydrogen cyanide.
3.Chemical properties: White prismatic crystalline powder. Slightly soluble in water and ethanol, insoluble in ether and benzene.
(1) As raw materials for guanidine salts and triazine diamine. By reacting dicyandiamide with acid, various guanidine salts can be produced. The benzene derivative triazine diamine obtained from the reaction of dicyandiamide and phenyl cyanide is an intermediate for coatings, laminated boards and molding powders.
(2) As a fixative for dyes, the dicyandiamide resin obtained by reacting dicyandiamide with formaldehyde can be used as a fixative for dyes.
(3) Dicyandiamide fertilizer, compound fertilizer of dicyandiamide can control the activity of nitrifying bacteria, regulate the conversion speed of nitrogen fertilizer in the soil, reduce nitrogen loss and improve fertilizer utilization efficiency.
(4) As a fine chemical intermediate. In medicine, it is used to produce nitroguanidine, sulfonamide drugs, etc.; it is also used to produce thiourea, nitrocellulose stabilizer, rubber vulcanization accelerator, steel surface hardener, artificial leather filler, adhesive, etc. The pharmaceutical intermediate 5-aza-2'-deoxyuridine can be obtained by reacting dicyandiamide with formic acid.
(5) For the determination of cobalt, nickel, copper and palladium, organic synthesis, nitrocellulose stabilizer, hardener, detergent, sulfurization accelerator, resin synthesis.
