Dimethyl disulfide is an organic sulfur compound. It is one of the odor components of the white-stink fungus, and also one of the odor components emitted when milk deteriorates under light (a degradation product of methanethiol). Industrially, dimethyl disulfide is synthesized by the method of dimethyl sulfate.


1.Dimethyl disulfide (dimethyl disulfide ether) industrial grade has a purity of ≥ 99%. It is a flammable yellow liquid with a smell of sulfur, melting point of -84.7℃, boiling point of 109.6℃. Vapor pressure at 20℃ is 3.0×10^6 mPa. KowlgP = 1.91. Henry constant is 105 Pa·m3/mol (calculated). Relative density at 20℃ is 1.062. It is soluble in water at 20℃ (2.7 g/L), and miscible with most organic solvents (15 - 25℃).
2.Stability: It remains stable even when heated to 300℃. It is unstable when heated in the presence of oxidants. Freezing point is 16℃.

5.Flammable hazard characteristics: Easily ignited by fire, high temperature or oxidants; Decomposes into toxic sulfur dioxide gas upon contact with acids or high heat.
It is used as a solvent, a catalyst for oxidation, a pesticide intermediate, a coking inhibitor, etc. Dimethyldithio and cresol react to form 2-methyl-4-hydroxybenzethiol, and then it is condensed with O,O-dimethylthiocarbamate chloride in an alkaline medium to obtain methidathion. This is an efficient and low-toxic organophosphorus insecticide with excellent efficacy in controlling rice moth, soybean stem borer and fly larvae. It can also be used in veterinary medicine to eliminate cattle fly maggots and cattle lice.
